Instants Birmans
The train that circles Yangon carries every morning thousands of passengers to their suburban
destination. The wagons are packed, as ticket costs
one tenth of a bus fare.
To every hour belongs one crowd, one merchandise, one scent. At 4 a.m., the flower sellers open the march, followed at 6 a.m. by the vegetable and fruit sellers. At 9 a.m., the students take over. All day, people hopping in and off, even when the train is still running.
Outside, Yangon’s concrete jungle has been replaced by endless fields of water cress. Merely half an hour after departure, the city is but a memory.
Mandalay gets mad about Chinlon, Burma's national sport during the Waso Festival. Part soccer part acrobacy, Chinlon consists of 6 players playing in a circle around a small ball made of rattan.
Each play lasts about 5 minutes. Players who use their feet, knees and thies are genuine virtuosos.
Chinlon is an exceptional sport game in so far is it is not a competitive sport : it is both a way to socialize and a popular entertainment, which all ages are fond of.
There are many Buddhist monastic schools in Burma but Kyakhetwine monastery in rural Rangoon is exemplary in many aspects. Not only does it offer Burmese, Arithmetic, Languages and IT classes to its pupils, but also it accepts all children, whatever their religion or wealth.
