4000 Islands of Laos (Si Phan Don)

This slide show is created from a part of selected photographs taken in Si Phan Don Laos PDR from May to June 2013. It is aimed to continue to the end of July of the same year or even further if it could find the funds. Then the project would be extended to cover also Tonle Sap in Cambodia. What you have seen now is the first part of the story, the “Plant” as I call it when fishermen are building their fish traps as an investment for gaining goods during the time of the second part, when the “Harvest” comes.
In the past, there have been several conflicts and discussions about the fishermen and their fish traps. It was postulated that they are causing the extinction of fish species from Mekong River due the over catches. However this seems to be one way only to tell the story. During the time of photographing, many stories from the other side, the fishermen, were told. Details have come to light, which put huge weight onto the reality of the story that is still waiting to be told. To which to fulfil the trust and transfer the fisherman life and their living to viewers.
The project itself is not built to take side or to tell, which side is correct in terms of the fishermen’s way of service and the extinction of fish species from Mekong River. Aim of the project is that after completion the viewers will easily receive enough information, either images or text stories, to judge the situation themselves. By then we surely do know, which one needs to be preserved.
